Over 28,500 entries received from 1,400 schools
Two schools have been announced as the winners of big prizes in the Tomorrow’s Engineers Week Big Quiz.
Designed to introduce students aged 11 to 16 to a career in engineering and written in collaboration with many of the professional engineering institutions, more than 28,500 young people from over 1,400 schools across the UK took part.
Two £1,000 STEM equipment vouchers have been awarded to:
Worthing High School, which secured the prize for the greatest number of entrants to the Quiz, beating stiff competition from Winterbourne Academy in Bristol and Hanley Castle High School in Worcester.
Bathgate Academy in West Lothian, which had the highest average score for students taking part. Waldegrave School For Girls in Twickenham and Farr High School in Thurso were runners up in this category.
The Quiz was part of Tomorrow’s Engineers Week, now in its eighth year, which has seen engineering institutions, employers and schools coming together to deliver inspiring activity to show young people the vital importance of engineering careers and deliver advice about how to become an engineer in the future.

“For Worthing High School to win the prize for most entries, from over 28,500 entries is a huge achievement and testament to all of the hard work from all of our STEM teachers.
“In particular I would like to thank Miss La (STEM lead in Maths), the Maths team and Design Technology team for promoting the quiz. Obviously I would also like to congratulate all of our amazing students and their fantastic STEM efforts.
“Our teacher’s enthusiasm and drive have helped to promote STEM throughout the whole school. We hope this Quiz will encourage every child at every level to see the exciting opportunities and careers in engineering and STEM.
“As a Technology teacher myself, I know the importance of setting goals and aspirations to our students and if we can stimulate a real passion and interest in engineering, we will help to provide a future full of wonder and real life enhancing applications that will benefit everyone in society.”
Tracey Bredski, PT Science at Bathgate Academy said:
“We are really pleased to have won with the highest average score for students taking part in The Big Quiz. We’ve recently been running STEM related events and it was obvious that the students were really engaged and interested in learning about the skills required for the world of work so we decided to get them to enter The Big Quiz.
“In 2019 we started the STEM Club where we enlisted the help of S5 students to take on the role of STEM Ambassadors which not only allowed them to engage with the junior school but also helped develop their leadership skills.
“We are very proud of the work the STEM Ambassadors are doing in the school and cannot wait to see what happens in the future.”
Dr Leevers continued:
“Let’s build on Tomorrow's Engineers week to ensure that all young people get the support they need to be inspired by and understand more about the thousands of future engineering roles in infrastructure, decarbonisation and maintenance projects to upgrade our hospitals, schools and road network, make public buildings greener and help the UK meet its aspirations of achieving Net Zero by 2050.”
